Things Worth Knowing
Works with uPVC windows. Perfect Fit frames are designed for uPVC windows and doors. If you have wooden or aluminium frames, we have other options that might suit better. We will check when we measure up.
Needs enough depth. The frame clips onto the window beading, so there needs to be enough depth for the blind to sit without catching on the handle. Most standard windows are fine, but we always check.
Colour matched frames. The Perfect Fit frame comes in different colours to match your window. White, brown, anthracite grey, oak effect, and more. It all blends in nicely so you just notice the fabric.
Blackout is not the same as thermal. These blinds block light brilliantly, but if you want insulation as well, have a look at our Honeycell blinds which trap air for better heat retention.
Fabric choices. Blackout does not mean boring. We have pleated blackout fabrics in loads of colours, so you can pick something that suits your room rather than settling for plain white.

What's the difference between blockout and dimout blinds?
Blockout blinds block 95-100% of light – we’re talking proper darkness where you can’t see your hand in front of your face. Dimout blinds (sometimes called room-darkening) block 80-90% of light – they make the room much darker but you can still tell it’s daytime. Blockout is essential if you’re a shift worker or very light sleeper, or for home cinemas. Dimout is usually fine for most bedrooms and living rooms where you want to reduce light but complete darkness isn’t crucial. Dimout blinds are also usually cheaper and come in more fabric choices because the light-blocking requirements aren’t as strict.
Can light still get through around the edges of blockout blinds?
It depends on the system. Standard roller blinds with blackout fabric will still have small light gaps at the sides, top, and bottom where the fabric doesn’t quite meet the frame. The Benthin Block-Out Roller with side channels eliminates these gaps almost completely, giving you proper total darkness. Pleated Perfect Fit Frames sit close to the glass so light gaps are minimal. BlindScreen® systems use side channels too, so they’re excellent for eliminating edge light. If total darkness is absolutely critical, go for a system with side channels. If you just want very dark but a tiny bit of light glow around edges is okay, standard blackout roller blinds will probably do the job.
Are blackout blinds good for keeping heat out in summer?
Yeah, they’re brilliant for that. The thick fabric and reflective backing (usually aluminium or white coating) bounce solar heat back out before it gets into your room. This can make a massive difference in south-facing bedrooms that get hammered by afternoon sun. The room stays much cooler without needing fans or air conditioning running all day. In winter, they work the other way – they trap heat inside and reduce heat loss through your windows. So they’re good year-round for temperature control, not just light blocking.
Can blockout blinds be fitted to all window types?
Most window types, yeah, but the best system depends on your specific windows. Perfect Fit frames only work on uPVC windows with the right kind of beading. The Benthin Block-Out Roller can be fitted to pretty much any window type – uPVC, timber, aluminium – because it mounts to the wall or ceiling rather than the window itself. BlindScreen® needs windows that open or tilt inwards so you can access both the blind and the screen. Unusual shaped windows might need custom solutions. We’ll assess your windows when we come to measure and recommend the best blockout system for your situation.
How do I clean blockout blinds?
Pretty straightforward – just wipe them with a slightly damp cloth. Don’t use harsh chemicals or bleach as they can damage the light-blocking coating on the back of the fabric. For pleated blinds, you can gently vacuum them with a brush attachment on low suction. The side channels on Benthin systems might need an occasional wipe to keep them clean and ensure smooth operation, but that’s about it. Avoid soaking the fabric or scrubbing too hard, especially on coated fabrics where you might damage the backing. Generally though, blackout blinds don’t show dirt as much as lighter fabrics, so they need less frequent cleaning.
Will blockout blinds make my room completely dark during the day?
Systems with side channels like the Benthin Block-Out Roller will get you as close to complete darkness as possible – we’re talking 98-100% light blocking. You genuinely won’t be able to tell if it’s day or night. Pleated Perfect Fit Frames get you to about 95% darkness – there might be a tiny glow around the very edges but the room will be very dark. Standard blockout roller blinds without side channels will give you maybe 90-95% darkness – very dark but you’ll see some light gaps at the edges. If your goal is proper pitch-black darkness for shift work or severe light sensitivity, invest in a system with side channels. If you just want a very dark room for better sleep, most blackout systems will do the job.
Are motorised blockout blinds worth the extra cost?
If you’ve got large or heavy blinds, or hard-to-reach windows, motorisation is definitely worth considering. Blackout blinds are often heavier than standard blinds because of the thick fabric and backing, so pulling them up and down manually on big windows can be a proper workout. Motorised blinds are also child-safe by design because there’s no hanging cords, which is a big plus. You can set them on timers to close automatically at sunset and open at sunrise, or control them via remote or smart home systems. They cost more upfront – usually £100-200 extra per blind – but if convenience and safety matter to you, it’s money well spent.
Can I use blockout blinds in bathrooms?
Yeah, but make sure you get moisture-resistant blackout fabric specifically designed for steamy environments. Standard blackout fabric coatings can sometimes be damaged by constant moisture and humidity. The Perfect Fit or Benthin systems work well in bathrooms because they sit close to or against the window, out of the way of sinks and showers. Avoid fabric blinds directly above or next to the shower if possible – they’ll get wet and might go mouldy. We’ll always advise on the best fabric choice for bathrooms when we come to measure. Generally speaking, blackout blinds work fine in bathrooms as long as you pick the right fabric and keep the room well ventilated.
