What's the difference between tracks and poles?
Curtain tracks are usually plastic or metal channels that mount to the wall or ceiling, and the curtains hang from gliders that slide along inside the track. They’re functional, discreet, and work brilliantly for bay windows or when you want the curtains to be the feature rather than the hardware. Poles are decorative rods that mount on brackets, and curtains either hang from rings or have eyelets/tabs that slide along the pole. Poles are more of a design feature – you see them, so they need to look good. Both work perfectly well; it’s about what look you’re after and what your windows need.
How do I choose the right curtain fabric?
Think about the room first. Bedrooms usually want heavier fabrics with blackout lining for light control and privacy. Living rooms can have lighter decorative fabrics that filter light beautifully. Kitchens need practical fabrics that can handle moisture and are easy to clean. Consider the style too – traditional rooms suit classic patterns and rich colours, contemporary rooms work better with plains or geometric designs. Think about light – dark rooms need lighter fabrics to brighten them up, while rooms with too much sun need heavier fabrics to control heat and glare. When we come to measure, we’ll bring samples and hold them up in your actual light, which is the best way to choose.
What length should my curtains be?
For a classic, elegant look, curtains should just touch the floor or have a tiny break (like trouser hems). For a more contemporary look, they can float about 1cm above the floor. For extra luxury and drama, you can have them “puddle” on the floor with 10-20cm extra fabric, though this is harder to keep clean. Avoid curtains that finish at the windowsill or halfway down the wall – they look unfinished and cheap. When we measure, we’ll advise on the best length for your room and style. Generally, longer is better – it makes rooms look bigger and more put-together.
How wide should my curtain pole or track be?
For the curtains to stack back properly when open and not block too much window, your pole or track should extend 15-30cm beyond each side of the window. So if your window is 120cm wide, your pole should be 150-180cm wide. This way, when curtains are fully open, they’re mostly off the glass and you get maximum light and view. If you haven’t got space either side (bay windows, corners, furniture in the way), we can work with what you’ve got, but extending beyond the window is always better if possible.
Can curtains help with energy bills?
Absolutely. Curtains create an insulating barrier between your room and the window, which helps keep heat in during winter. Lined curtains are good, thermal-lined (interlined) curtains are even better. Close them at dusk before it gets properly cold, and you’ll notice rooms stay warmer. In summer, closing curtains during the day on south-facing windows helps keep rooms cooler by blocking solar heat. The thicker and more lined your curtains, the better they insulate. You won’t see a massive drop in your energy bills overnight, but over a year it does add up, and rooms feel more comfortable which is worth something too.
How do I clean curtains?
It depends on the fabric. Some curtains can be machine washed on a gentle cycle, but many need to be dry cleaned, especially lined or interlined curtains and delicate fabrics like silk or velvet. Check the care label or ask us when we fit them. For general maintenance, vacuum them gently with a brush attachment every few weeks to remove dust. If they get marks, try spot-cleaning very carefully with a damp cloth, but test on an inconspicuous area first. Professional cleaning every few years keeps them looking their best, especially in rooms where they get grimy (kitchens, dining rooms near cooking areas).
What heading style should I choose?
It depends on your room style and whether you’re using a track or pole. Pencil pleat is the most versatile – works with tracks or poles, suits any style from traditional to contemporary, and creates neat, regular folds. Eyelet is modern and casual, brilliant for contemporary rooms, and slides smoothly on poles. Pinch pleat (double or triple) is elegant and formal, perfect for traditional or luxurious rooms. Tab top is relaxed and informal, good for bedrooms or casual spaces. Wave heading creates gorgeous flowing S-curves, very contemporary and high-end looking. We’ll show you examples and advise based on your fabric, room style, and how you want the curtains to look when open and closed.
How long do curtains take to make and fit?
Once we’ve measured your windows and you’ve chosen your fabric, heading style, and lining options, it usually takes 3-4 weeks for your curtains to be made. They’re all made to order specifically for your windows, so there’s a bit of a wait, but it’s worth it to get something that fits perfectly. Fitting the poles or tracks and hanging the curtains typically takes half a day to a full day depending on how many windows we’re doing.
