Vertical blinds have been a favourite in British homes for decades, and it is easy to see why. Those long, elegant louvres hang beautifully across wide windows and patio doors, giving you brilliant light control and easy access to your garden. They are practical, they look smart, and they work in pretty much any room.
At Perfect Blinds UK, we have been fitting made to measure vertical blinds across Yorkshire since 2013. Our collection includes hundreds of fabrics in every colour and style going. From subtle neutrals that blend into the background to bold patterns that make a statement, we have got something for every taste.
Vertical blinds are particularly good for sliding doors, bi-folds, and large window runs where other blind types can look fussy or be tricky to operate. The louvres draw neatly to one side or split in the middle, so you can get in and out without any hassle.
Perfect for wide windows. Vertical louvres handle big expanses of glass better than almost any other blind type. They do not sag, they do not look cramped, and they operate smoothly even on very wide tracks.
Brilliant for patio doors. Need to nip out to the garden? Just slide the louvres aside. No pulling up heavy blinds or fighting with cords. Vertical blinds make access dead simple.
Excellent light control. Rotate the louvres to let in as much or as little light as you want. Angle them one way for privacy, the other way for a view. Close them completely when you need darkness.
Huge fabric choice. We offer vertical blinds in hundreds of colours and textures. Plains, patterns, textures, blackout fabrics. Whatever suits your room, we can match it.
Replace just the louvres. If a louvre gets damaged years down the line, you do not need a whole new blind. We can often replace individual louvres, which saves money and hassle.
Great value. Vertical blinds give you a lot of coverage for your money. If you have got big windows to dress, they are hard to beat on value.
Louvre width matters. We offer vertical blinds in 89mm and 127mm louvre widths. Narrower louvres suit smaller windows and give a more delicate look. Wider louvres work better on large windows and patio doors, and they collect less dust.
High-Performance Shading. Perfect for living areas, offices, and bedrooms, our light-filtering and room-darkening fabrics provide exceptional glare control. While vertical blinds cannot offer a 100% total blackout effect due to the natural spacing between the louvres, our overlapping design minimizes light gaps to create a beautifully shaded, private environment.
Can be draughty. Because vertical blinds hang loosely, they do not seal against the window like some other blind types. If draughts are a concern, consider adding a pelmet at the top or look at our Perfect Fit options.
Not ideal for small windows. Vertical blinds look best on wider windows where the louvres have room to hang properly. For smaller windows, roller or venetian blinds often work better.
Child safety sorted. All our blinds meet current UK safety standards. We offer breakaway chain connectors and wand control options that are safer for homes with young children.
Easy to clean. A quick vacuum with a brush attachment or a wipe with a damp cloth keeps vertical blinds looking fresh. Some fabrics can even go in the washing machine if they need a deeper clean.
Not anymore, no. Vertical blinds got a bad reputation in the 90s and early 2000s when everyone had the same boring office-style ones. But modern vertical blinds look completely different – the fabrics are gorgeous, the operation systems are improved, and the hardware comes in multiple colours. They’re still the most practical option for patio doors and large windows, and now they actually look good too. If someone shows you vertical blinds and they look dated, they’re showing you old-fashioned fabrics. Come see our modern fabric collections and you’ll change your mind.
Absolutely, it just depends on the style of your bay window. For angled, multi-faceted bays, we typically install individual blinds in sections—one for each window pane. This gives you neat, independent control over light and privacy in every section.
For smoothly curved or bow windows, we also offer specialized curved and bent headrails. Rather than forcing a standard track, these are precision-engineered to follow the exact architectural arc of your window for a seamless, flawless glide. Since bay windows require exact measurements, our team handles the complex fitting for you to ensure a perfect finish.
If you’ve got windows open and there’s a breeze, vertical louvres can rattle against each other or the window frame, which is annoying. The best solution is chainless weights – each louvre has its own weight rather than being connected by a chain, which stops them banging together. You can also get clips that hold the louvres together at the bottom, which keeps them stable. Some people just close the louvres slightly (rotate them so they overlap a bit) when windows are open, which stops them flapping about. If it’s a constant problem, it might be worth considering different blinds for that particular window.
They can be, yeah, but most people prefer other options for bedrooms. Vertical blinds are excellent at controlling light when the louvres are closed, but they’re not as good as proper blackout systems if you’re a light sleeper. You’ll get some light gaps where the louvres meet. That said, if your bedroom has patio doors or a really wide window, vertical blinds with blackout fabric might be your best practical option. For standard bedroom windows, we’d usually recommend roller blinds or Venetian blinds instead.
Good quality vertical blinds should last 7-10 years minimum, and often longer. The louvres might need replacing before the track mechanism does – if you’ve got pets or kids who grab at them, they can get damaged. But the track, carriers, and operating system will usually keep working for years. The fabric can fade over time if it’s in direct harsh sunlight, but our quality fabrics are designed to resist fading much better than cheap alternatives. If you treat them gently and keep them clean, vertical blinds will serve you well for years.
Cats particularly can be a nightmare with vertical blinds – they love to bat at the hanging louvres or climb through them to get to the window. Dogs can damage them too if they’re trying to look out or they get tangled in the louvres. Vertical blinds aren’t the most pet-proof option, to be honest. If you’ve got destructive pets, you might be better off with roller blinds or shutters that they can’t easily damage. That said, plenty of people with pets have vertical blinds without problems – it depends on your specific pets and how they behave around window coverings.
Close the louvres completely (rotate them so they’re flat and overlapping), then wipe down each louvre with a damp cloth. Start at the top and work your way down, wiping both sides of each louvre. For stubborn marks, use a tiny bit of diluted washing-up liquid, but don’t soak the fabric. You can also vacuum them gently with a brush attachment on low suction. Some louvres can be taken down and washed, but check with us first – not all fabrics are washable and you don’t want to ruin them. Generally, a wipe down every few weeks keeps them looking clean.
They’re decent at insulation, yeah. The vertical louvres create a barrier between your room and the window, which helps reduce heat loss in winter and heat gain in summer. When the louvres are closed and overlapping, you get a reasonable insulating effect. They’re not as good as honeycomb blinds or shutters for insulation, but they’re definitely better than having nothing on your windows. The thicker the fabric, the better the insulation – blackout fabrics are generally better than sheer fabrics. If energy efficiency is your main concern, we’d probably recommend pleated blinds or shutters, but vertical blinds do contribute to keeping your rooms more comfortable.
Motorisation. Motorised vertical blinds let you open, close, and rotate the louvres at the touch of a button. No more walking across the room to adjust your blinds. We fit smooth, quiet motors from trusted brands that make operation effortless.
Smart home control. Connect your motorised verticals to Alexa or Google Assistant. Set schedules so they open with your morning alarm or close when the sun gets too strong. Control them from your phone even when you are away from home.
Curved tracks. Got a bay window? No problem. We can fit vertical blinds on curved tracks that follow the shape of your bay perfectly. They look smart and operate just as smoothly as straight runs.
Coordinated rooms. Fitting blinds throughout your home? Vertical blinds in matching fabrics look brilliant across multiple windows. We can help you create a consistent look from room to room.
